Patients who hear they need root canal therapy often experience anxiety or fear just due to the bad reputation this particular treatment has received in the past.
Root canals are typically associated with pain; however, it’s usually a dental infection that’s causing your discomfort.
Our dentists want to clear up a few of the myths surrounding root canal therapy and assure our patients that this is a very comfortable, efficient, and effective treatment for preserving your tooth.
Root canal therapy actually relieves the pain and discomfort you’re feeling.
When your tooth suffers from infection, decay, or a severe fracture, you may need root canal therapy to preserve it. You may begin to feel sensitivity in your tooth to hot or cold foods or beverages if you have decay that has reached your root.
If your root becomes infected, you’ll experience a painful toothache. It’s important to note that this infection will not go away without treatment, so please contact Dental Design right away.
Root canal therapy is used to eliminate infected tissue from within your tooth. Our doctors will clean the infection out of your tooth through a small access hole in the top, which they’ll seal with a temporary filling after the procedure is complete. After your tooth has had time to heal, we’ll need to restore your tooth with either a permanent dental filling or a crown.
Most of our patients are pleasantly surprised at how efficient a root canal procedure can be and that they feel quite comfortable. We’ll use dental anaesthetics to ensure that you don’t feel anything throughout your procedure, and this will also alleviate the pain caused by your infection.
For our patients who need a little extra care in getting through their procedure, we also offer nitrous oxide, which is a breathable gas that works quickly to help you feel relaxed during treatment. Nitrous leaves your system immediately after your procedure, so you’ll be able to safely drive yourself home.
Did you know that many root canals could be avoided with preventative care?
If we’re able to detect decay early on in your tooth with x-rays or an examination at your routine check-up, then you could remove that decay and treat your tooth with a less invasive filling. This is why it’s important that we see you every six months for your preventative appointments.
Your trusted team at Dental Design is here for you, and we encourage you to call us if you have any concerns about your oral health or you’re experiencing dental pain or sensitivity. We look forward to getting you back on the path to wellness again!
